Jolly Boating – on the Thames

A number of similar images from 1912-1914 involving Stanley Appleyard and companions enjoying an idyllic time by the river. Originally thought to be located near Sheffield based on family connections with Sheffield.  But the industrial nature of the Sheffield and Tinsley canal at the time would seem to rule that out. Similar idyllic boating images can be found of the Thames an this now sees to be the definite location.  The exact location of the lock still to be determined.

Gorleston Pavilion Theatre

Amongst a family photo album entitled “Gorleston-on-Sea August 1928” there is the  following postcard image:-

Stage scene postcard
Stage scene postcard

The assumption is that this was from a show at the Gorleston Pavilion Theatre . In the album the rear of the postcard is not readable because the card is stuck in the  album. However traces of the postmark are clear on the front.  The postcard was produced by   Walter Gardiner Photographer  of Worthing.

Stanley’s holiday pages

Page containing family holidays mainly from the 1920s and 1930s. Very much work in progress so far.  Plan was to create a time-line for the post.  Some  progress was made but never completed.  So, for now (July 2019), there is just a simple list with the destinations and dates as I come across them from the albums:

  • ???? Wales (album 17) includes images of Elan valley (dams), Conwy suspension bridge, Penrhyn Castle Grand Lodge Gate. But images of HS 9 along way from home.
  • 1907 September – Bridlington (album 05)
  • 1922 May – Bournemouth (albums 01 and 13)
