Austhorpe Hall is mentioned on the family tree entitled “The Smiths of Manor House and Haigh Side Farm, Rothwell with their female Branches”.
The family Line to Austhorpe
- William Wriglesworth of Sissons House Middleton (1662-1719)
- Daughter Ann (1693-1760) married William Smith of Wakefield and Haigh Side Farm Rothwell (-1770)
- Son Joseph (also of W and HSF R) (1745-1810) married Sarah daughter of Richard Westerman of Rothwell
- Son Joseph (also of W and HSF R) (1777-1859) married Mary daughter of Sir Paul Banks by Lady Mary his daughter of Mr Nappy
- Daughter Jane (1812-1887) married Joshua Appleyard of Austhorpe Hall (late of Flockton Hall)
- Youngest son (of eleven) Henry (1852-1905) also of Austhorpe Hall married Annie Fallas (daughter of John)
- Henry died 23rd July 1905 at Austhorpe – probate to his widow Mary Annie
- 1911 census shows Mary Annie still at Austhorpe with occupation of farmer.
- Census also shows eldest son Joshua (1885-1947) with occupation “farmers son”
- Joshua married Annie Batty on 6th June 1923 at the Wesleyan Methodist chapel Halton. Joshua’s residence is still the Hall at Austhorpe.
- Connection with the Hall appears continue after the marriage. The first born son John Charles Joshua is recorded as being born in Tadcaster in 1924 but Austhorpe is included in the Tadcaster Registration District.
- The 1939 Register shows the family (Joshua and Annie and two children) now living at 28 Barrowby Road.
Stanley’s Photos
Interestingly the following appears to be taken at the same time and place showing a group of tennis players. Stanley Appleyard, back row second from left is clearly identified and Frank his elder brother is to his right. But is that Doris Appleyard (aged 12) sitting next to Joshua (aged 21) in the front row?
Some other Austhorpe Hall pages:
Spookily came across the following page Austhorpe Leodis page This contains a post from Patricia Appleyard referring to cousin Brian Appleyard’s family tree. I am not guilty. But Appleyard family moved from Flockton Hall to Austhorpe hall sometime between 1841 and 1851 (according to census data).
Sometime after the marriage of Joshua and Annie Batty in 1923, Annie’s father Charles Batty, and presumably mother Sarah Ann Batty nee Lee, must have moved into Austhorpe Hall for their probate recods show ‘ BATTY Charles of Austhorpe Hall Whitkirk Leed died 17 April 1939 Probate Wakefield 30 May to Sarah Ann Batty widow’. Then ‘BATTY Sarah Ann of 28 Barrowby Road Whitkirk Leeds died 3 October 1940 at 4 Barrowby Road …..’ This rather indicates that the Appleyards departed Austhorpe Hall twixt April 1938 and October 1940.
The 1939 census shows Joshua Appleyard and Annie living at 28 Barrowby Road. The Appleyards, therefore, must have departed Austhorpe Hall between April and September 1939. Richard, thank you for the comment.
