A small set of Stanley Appleyard’s photos all tagged Bridlington 1907. Family were still living in Sheffield and travel from Sheffield to Bridlington was clearly achievable by train at the time.
Full set of images follows. Stanley Appleyard appears in one of the two portrait groups entitled “EATGA”. Locating “EATGA” has taken a while, as no relevant reference could be found online to the unusual word. One of the other Bridlington images shows “The Crescent”, and this suggested that the “EATGA” images were taken there. Boundary walls and ironwork in the two images match those in current images of “The Crescent”. The final confirmation was the realisation that there was a brick wall to the right of “EATGA” doorway. This occurs only at 11 “The Crescent”. A current view of number 11 is shown in the link in sources below.
The family group in front of “EATGA”
I have positively identified Frank Appleyard standing, Mary Ellen (Smith) Appleyard – second from left and Marion Appleyard right of picture. These three family members appear in both images.
Stanley Appleyard appears left in the image with the brickwork to right. This photo confirms the location as 11 the Crescent. I have not confirmed yet the identity of the other three; however, they appear in a family photo at Austhorpe Hall the same year.

The Crescent, Bridlington 1907
The image of The Crescent shows, in addition, Marlborough Terrace to the right. However number 11 is not in the photo. The image shows entrances to 7, 8 and 9 and number 10 is on the corner. The entrance to 11 (and 10) is round the corner. Kelly’s directory of 1913 shows commercial entries for all but one of the 12 properties in The Crescent and 10 properties appear as “Apartments”. Interestingly the same directory for 1893 shows 12 properties with a business of “Apartments”. The conclusion is that the properties in The Crescent and Marlborough Terrace were specifically built as apartments.
Family at Bridlington 1890s
The Bridlington & Quay Gazette helpfully maintained a visitors guide (sourced from The British Newspaper Archive). The September 1892 entry in the Gazette shows “Appleyard Mr Mrs & baby High Hoyland Barnsley / Appleyard Mast F & Mast S .. / Appleyard Miss M ..” staying at 6 Burlington Terrace. The references to Austhorpe and High Hoyland confirm the Appleyard family – Arthur, his wife Mary Ellen and their children Frank (b 1885), Stanley (b 1888), Margaret (b 1889) and Marion (b 1891).
Two years earlier the August 1890 entry shows “Appleyard Mr and Mrs Austhorp / Appleyard Miss and Mast ..” staying at 9 Manor Street Bridlington. Here Mast Appleyard would have been Frank and Miss Appleyard would have been Frank’s half sister Alice (b 1870). There is no reference to Stanley in Bridlington in 1890.
